Independent UK reporting on scams, fraud and financial harm

Directory

Where to report a scam at your bank

Your bank is the first free route and where a reimbursement claim starts. Call 159 where it is supported — it connects you to your own bank's fraud team and no scammer can spoof it — or use the number printed on your card.

The 159 short code

159 is a secure short code that routes you to your own bank's fraud team, in the same way 999 routes to the emergency services. It is the safest way to end a suspicious call and reach the real bank: hang up first, then dial 159. Standard call charges apply; most providers include it in inclusive minutes. Not every bank has joined, so the card number is the fallback.

What to ask for on the call

  1. Say clearly that you have been the victim of a scam, and give the exact payments.
  2. Ask them to attempt a recall of the funds from the receiving bank.
  3. Ask for the case to be logged as a scam claim, and for the reference number.
  4. Ask when you will get the decision, and for it in writing with the reason.
  5. Say if illness, bereavement, isolation or a language barrier played any part.

If the answer is wrong or nothing arrives, the Financial Ombudsman Service route is free.
