Independent UK reporting on scams, fraud and financial harm

Newsroom roles

We are a small independent newsroom covering UK scams and fraud. This page sets out how we hire, the standards you would be held to, and how to reach us — including when nothing is formally open.

Current openings

No formally advertised vacancies right now

When a role opens it is listed here with the salary band, basis and closing date — we do not run permanently open adverts to collect CVs. In the meantime we read every speculative application and commission freelance work continuously.

The roles we recruit for

  • Reporter — scams and consumer fraud

    Staff or regular freelance

Working the Warning List, regulator feeds and reader tips into checked stories. You need to be comfortable calling firms for a right of reply and holding a story until it stands up.

  • Data reporter

    Staff or fixed-term

Building and querying our archive of warnings, ombudsman decisions and regulator notices, and turning it into charts and tables readers can check for themselves.

  • Sub-editor / production

    Shift work

Headlines, standfirsts, legal read, and keeping the change log honest so every correction is visible on the page it affects.

  • Freelance contributors

    Per commission

Regional and specialist reporting — court results, local trading-standards cases, cyber incidents affecting UK consumers.

What you would be held to

  • Every story carries a named byline and a named editor who signed it off.
  • Sources are linked. If we cannot link it, we say where it came from and why we trust it.
  • Right of reply is requested before we name a firm or an individual, and the outcome is recorded on the article.
  • Corrections are published in full on a public page and on the article itself — never quietly edited away.
  • No advertising, no affiliate links, no sponsored placements, and no referrals to claims firms or solicitors. Nobody's commercial interest shapes a story.

Our full editorial policy and ownership and funding pages set out the same rules in detail. Read them before applying — they are the job.

How we hire

  1. 1. A short written application. Two or three paragraphs on what you would cover here, plus three published pieces or, if you have none, three story ideas with the sourcing sketched out.
  2. 2. A conversation. Forty minutes with an editor about how you check things and what you would do when a story does not stand up.
  3. 3. A paid exercise. A real task at freelance rates — never unpaid test work, and never work we publish without paying for it.
  4. 4. References and a conflicts check. We ask about paid work for firms we cover; a declared interest is recorded in our conflicts register rather than being a bar in itself.

Terms and conduct

  • Freelance invoices are paid within 30 days of commission delivery.
  • Remote-first across the UK, with the beat determining where you actually need to be.
  • Copyright in commissioned work is licensed to us; you keep the right to republish in a portfolio.
  • We recruit without regard to age, disability, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or background, and we make reasonable adjustments at every stage — tell us what you need.
